Golf—A Game of Discipline

Have you ever watched a round of golf from start to finish? Some may find it dull; others might think it to be too stiff. Practically every golfer out in the course is donned in completely denim-free attire, wearing preppy collared shirts, severely pressed pants and leather belts. And golf shoes that look pretty funny too, once you first check them out. It is also usually very quiet, in comparison to the raucous screaming and cheering during a game of, let’s say, soccer. The mere beeping of a cell phone is frowned upon, and everyone at a golf game—spectator or player—seems to be talking in low, hushed tones.

Despite the fact that many people look down at golf because of its perceived severity in terms of behavior and its lack of physical activity, it remains to be quite a popular sport all over the world. It is mostly popular in Scotland (which is apparently the homeland of modern golf), the United States, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland, but some parts of Asia, such as Japan have already long jumped into the golf bandwagon. It is not just a game for old and wealthy retirees, for so many young people are also driven to try the game out because of its slick appeal.

A game officially begins at the start of golf tee time . This is the time of the day which a golfer has scheduled to begin his round. Usually it may take seven to fifteen minutes, depending on the pace of the round. Although not all courses take them, many still encourage and even require the players to book golf tee time reservations so as to avoid having to wait in line for several hours before finally getting a chance to play. This is quite commonplace especially when one plans to play in well-known golf courses. It is also ideal to schedule at least a week in advance prior to the day.

Golf, a game of precision and discipline, can be used by players, novices and professionals alike, to develop and hone personality and character. For instance, during a round of golf, they have to be immediately decisive and quick in using whichever club is suitable for the shot. Groups follow and wait for players to finish, so it is important to be able to make good decisions under a limited period of time. A golfer is also expected to be on time or be at the course several minutes prior to tee time. Some who may arrive on the course about an hour early may get the chance to practice putting and hitting some balls on the driving range. On the other hand, once a golfer is late for tee time, he is automatically disqualified.

Many people might say that golf would bore them to death; well, it takes time to love this grand sport. There are no episodes of sprinting, hogging balls, or bodies colliding—physical elements present in more vigorous sports—but a game of golf would surely do wonders for one’s frame of mind and intellectual sharpness
